Phosphate rustproofing, i.e. the use of a heavy phosphate coating in conjunction with oil or wax, was the original application of phosphate coating and is still of significant industrial importance. Crystalline phosphate coating provide a porous surface that can absorb oil; thus, an important use of coating is to maintain an oil film over the entire metal surface. Crystalline coatings base on ferrous phosphate , manganese phosphate and zinc phosphate are all employed for most protective purposes.
