Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES)

Details

Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer (ICP) is used to analyze metals and elements present in natural samples at trace levels. The principle of the ICP relies on the technique of spectroscopy, which involves measuring the energy emitted by the target elements during excitation. This excitation occurs in a high-temperature plasma (Plasma) environment.
When the atoms of the target element absorb energy from the intense heat of the plasma, they enter an excited state. This excited state is unstable, causing the atoms to release excess energy in order to return to their original ground state. The emitted energy has distinct wavelengths, unique to each element (Characteristic pattern), which can be utilized for qualitative analysis.

Moreover, the emitted energy from these unstable atoms has a direct linear relationship with the concentration of the specific element. This relationship allows for the creation of a calibration curve that plots the emitted energy against the concentration, facilitating quantitative analysis. This makes ICP a powerful tool for both qualitative and quantitative assessments of trace elements in various samples.

Sample Analysis Services

  • Analyze the concentrations of various elements in chemical reagents for quality control purposes.
  • Assess heavy metal concentrations in wastewater from industrial facilities, such as zinc, nickel, manganese, chromium, lead, and cadmium.
  • Detect and quantify contaminants in both solid and liquid samples.

Usage Limitations

  • The sample must be a clear solution, which can be colored or colorless. If the sample is solid, like a powder, it must be prepared by dissolving or digesting before analysis. This preparation also includes diluting the sample to ensure its concentration is within the range of the standard calibration curve.
