Gas Soft Nitriding

Gas Soft Nitriding is a thermo-chemical treatment that involves diffusion of both nitrogen and carbon into surface of ferrous materials and form compound layer that increase hardness and wear resistance. This technique is suitable for low carbon steel to alloy.

Gas Soft Nitriding is a surface-hardening process also known as Gas ferritic nitrocarburizing that uses both nitrogen and carbon diffuse into the surface of steel at a temperature range 540-590°C, but with more nitrogen than carbon, when compared to carbonitriding process because gas soft nitriding process does not involve heating into austenite phase first and then quenching to form martensite structure, which will be resulting minimum distortion and excellent dimensional control.

This process can form compound layer that increase hardness and wear resistance. The depth of case and its properties are greatly depending on the concentration and type of alloy elements in the steel such as Cr, Mo. In general, the higher the alloy content, the higher the case hardness. This technique is suitable for low carbon steel to alloy.
